What is a Book?
What is a Book? That was one of our guiding questions this semester, as we attempted to find new ways to understand the materiality of texts.
Each student chose one book from our Special Collections library - so, these are our books, roughly categorized according to genre.
Material Texts
What are the important material features of our books? How do these features shape the responses of readers? Can we "read" the materiality of a book, and if so, what can we learn?
Here are a few of the features the students identified in their books.
Used Books
Books are of course made to be used by their readers, and the evidence left behind by thost past users can teach us about the history of a book, and the history of the book, as a discipline.
Here are a few signs of use -- with a particular focus on marginalia -- that the students found in their books.
